Nicholas, with sixteen other Amoses in that county, took the oath of allegiance to the American Colonies in March 1778. He was appointed Ensign in the Militia by the House of Delegates on 9 Apr 1778 and served in the Jarrettsburg Company, much of his duties of the militia being to guard the shore line of Chesapeake Bay.
The family moved to Washington Co., MD, prior to 1790 where he was listed with a family numbering twelve and with two slaves.
It is believed that all the children of Nicholas and Elizabeth moved to Kentucky.
Nicholas and his son Thomas purchased land in Bourbon County near Paris, adjoining where "the Smyth Run empties into the Hinkston", from Abraham Byrd (100 acres), between the early pioneer village of Ruddle's Mills and Millersburg, KY.

Notes for WILLIAM AMOS: [2]
Colonial Families vol 3. Our Amos Family by Sara McFadden Amos. MD records
Griffith and Allied Families by Loraine Harting, Dayton, Wa. 3 Apr 1985.
Maurine Schmitz and Glendola Peck compiled the following:
William Amos our immigrant ancestor, was born in England abt 1690 and died in 1759 in Baltimore County, MD, in that portion which later became Harford County in 1773. He and his wife were buried on the family homestead but when the property (later called Mt Soma) went out of the possesion of his descendants, their remains were moved to the Fallston cemetery at the Friends Meeting House. He was not a Quaker but his son William was. William Amos, Sr. was laid to rest beside his son's grave and a stone properly acquired at that time was engraved "William Amos of England. Died 1759 " Of his wife we know only that her name was Ann, shown by the register of births of their children and by the mention in his will, showing that she outlived him. An unmarked crude stone supposedly marks her grave at Fallston.
Land records at the Hall of Records, Annapolis, MD give account of William Amos' purchases and possession of more than 1300 acres in Baltimore County.
His Will was written Sept 24, 1757 and was proven Mar 10, 1759. Baltimore Co.Will Book 2 p 317.
Will: ...Imprimis, I give and bequeath unto my dear and well beloved wife, Ann Amos, the use of my Dwelling Plantation during her natural life with the land thereunto belonging and also one negro girl named Feebe to her and her heirs and the use of all my negroes during her widowhood but in case she married then my will is that my said wife have the one third part of my personel estate...." Register of St. John's p. 67, 46-R.
It is not known whether Thomas was born in Maryland or brought as an infant from England. His parents were in Baltimore County by 17l5 and Thomas was registered in St. John's at the same time as was a sister and two brothers, the latest of their births being 1721. In 1737 Thomas was taxed in the Upper Hundred of the Gunpowder. The widowed mother-in-law Elizabeth (Cox) Day married 2nd Robert Bishop on September 22, 1742. Thomas Amos apparently became deeply in debt and morgaged much of his property to his step father-in-law, Robert Bishop and his brother-in-law Josias Slade. On Sept 5, 1760, (after the death of William Amos, Sr.) there was an indenture of Thomas Amos to William, Benjamin and Joshua Amos, his brothers, for 72 acres of "Brantners Ridge", lying in the fork of Winters Run, for 66 pounds of current money. (Baltimore County Deeds B L Fol 107)
Will of William Amos, Sr.: "...Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Amos, all that part of a Tract ofg Land that is already laid out for him out of a Tract of Land lying in Baltimore County and called "Brantner's Ridge" computed to be ..(some missing or illegible). .Thomas his heirs and assigns forever and likewise one negro boy named Aranace, to his heirs and assigns forever."
