Hello Bob, My name is Wally Clingan. I am writing for the inclusion of my family in the Bourbon County listings. It may be of help to future researchers. My ggggrandfather James Clingan was resident in Bourbon County from 1799 through at least 1803and probably as late as 1808. Perhaps his Father, John Clingan was there as well. We first found them in the Bourbon County tax list compiled by one John Watson in 1801. book 2;page two. It reads: May 27; John Clingan (Indian Creek) no land listed. White males above 21...2. 16-21......1 horses 1. That seems to say there were four there, but again maybe only three if John was one of those over 21. It's a little confusing.
The 1802 Walton tax book No.2 page 2 read this way: June 1: Edward Clinging (Clingan) on Indian Creek white male over 21.........1 horses..1 no land listed.
June 1. John Clinging (Clingan) white male above 21 ...1 horses and colt....2 no land listed.
June 19, James Clingan white male over 21....1 horse 1 no land listed.
1803 book 3;added page 2: June 7 Edward Clingan; white male over 21.......1 horses....1 no land listed.
June 7 John Clingan male over 21......1 horses and mare 2 no land listed.
June 7 James Clingan male over 21....1 horse and mare 3 no land listed.
1804 John Walton's Book no.3 page 2:
June 6 Edward Clingan; white male over 21.....1 horse and colt 2 no land listed.
June 6 John Clingan white male over 21....1 horse and mare 2. no land listed.
June 6 James Clingan white male over 21...1 horse and colt 2, no land listed.
1805 John Madison's book The information is the same as the others. The only thing I do not understand other than the problem of whether there were four or three on the first list is this. Edward, who was a brother of James was married to a Susannah Mitcheltree and had their first son in 1801. Why woulld they not be listed? Again, on April 19,1803, James married a girl named Ruth Monteer ( The Kentucky Book of marriages had her as Mateer) Why wasn't she included on the list? Didn't they list women in those days?
Also in the 1801 and 1804 census there was a man named John Monteer who was probably the father of Ruth Monteer, however, there were no women listed on his record either. Puzzling eh?
Well you have at leastsix different names you can add to the early settlers list if you care to do so. If I can help you with anything else let me know. Wally wc@erinet.com
