Notes on Zachariah Eastin: [1]
Zachariah Eastin came to Kentucky in 1784: [The Eastin Family in Kentucky, Robert McBride Eastin, 1926, publication data missing, photocopy, Phyllis Clendaniel <clendan@louisa.net>, 18 July 1998.]
The second son of Augustin Eastin, Zachariah Eastin remained in Bourbon County. He was seven years old when he came from Virginia with his father. He served with some disinction during the War of 1812 and the Indian Wars. Mr. Edgar Eastin of Evansville, Indiana now has in his possession a commission signed by Governor Isaac Shelby and W. D. Mardin, Sec., September 10, 1813, appointing Zachariah Eastin as Major 2nd Battalion, 4th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteers. He served under General William Henry Harrison all through his campaigns in the West, taking part in the battles of Tippecanoe and The Thames. If the date of the commission is the actual date of his promotion as a Major, he must have been a Captain at the battle of Tippecanoe, which occurred November 7, 1811, and a Major at the battle of The Thames, which occurred late in 1813. Before the end of the war he was made a Colonel. He remained in the army after the war and rose to the rank of Brigadier-General, which rank he held until 1824, when he resigned and retired.
